About the PDF Page Numbers tool

Page numbers turn a PDF from a stack of pages into a navigable document. They let a reader cite a passage, a reviewer leave a comment on the right spot, and a printer keep the pages in order if the staple ever pops loose. The Page Numbers tool stamps a clean, customizable number onto every page of a PDF in a few seconds — without uploading the file anywhere and without re-exporting from the original software.

What you can customize

• Where to start numbering. Begin on page 1, or skip a cover and table of contents by starting on page 3, 5, or wherever you like. Earlier pages are left untouched.
• Which number to show first. The first numbered page can read "1", "5", "iii", or whatever you set. Useful when stitching together appendices, follow-on volumes, or front matter that uses lowercase Roman.
• Arabic or Roman. Standard digits (1, 2, 3) for body content, lowercase Roman (i, ii, iii) for front matter, or uppercase Roman (I, II, III) for appendices, prefaces, and formal documents.
• Label format. Print the number alone, surround it with dashes ("- 1 -"), prefix it with "Page", or include the total ("Page 1 of 24").
• Position. Six anchors — bottom-left, bottom-center, bottom-right, and the same three at the top. Bottom-center is the safe default for most documents.
• Font. Helvetica, Times Roman, or Courier, each available in regular or bold. Match the body font of the document so the numbers blend in instead of looking pasted on.
• Font size and color. Set the size in points and pick any color. A subtle dark gray works well for most documents; black or a brand color works for formal reports.
• Margin from edge. Push the number closer to the edge or further into the page. 30 points is a comfortable footer; smaller values sit near the trim.

See the result before you commit

Once you click Add Page Numbers & Preview, the original and numbered PDFs appear side by side. Tweak any setting, re-run, and only download when the placement, font, and size all look right.

• Adding page numbers to a scanned or exported document that came out without any.
• Stitching together a binder where front matter uses lowercase Roman and the body uses Arabic.
• Preparing a manuscript, thesis, or report for submission to a journal, publisher, or course that requires numbered pages.
• Numbering exhibits, attachments, or appendices for legal filings, RFPs, or board packets.
• Labeling pages of a printed handout so attendees can follow along ("turn to page 5").

Your file stays on your computer

The entire tool runs in your browser. The PDF you load is never uploaded, never sent to a server, and never seen by anyone but you — even when it's a contract, a draft thesis, or anything else sensitive. Close the tab and the file is gone from this tool entirely.
