About the Bill of Sale Generator

Selling a car to a stranger from the internet, a boat to a neighbor, a horse, a rifle, a couch: every private sale needs the same piece of paper, and most people end up on an ad-covered template farm downloading a Word file from 2011. This generator builds the real thing: a structured, legal-style bill of sale with the clauses that make the document worth having — the parties, the property with its identifying numbers, the price in words and figures, condition and lien certifications, the federal odometer disclosure for vehicles, and proper signature, witness, and notary blocks.

And unlike the template farms, it handles the signing. Sign right on the page (draw with a finger or type your name in a signature script), download the PDF, and if the buyer isn't standing next to you, hit Send to buyer: the message carries step-by-step instructions for counter-signing with our free PDF Signature tool on their own phone or computer. Two signatures, two devices, and neither copy of the document ever touches a server.

Common questions

Is a bill of sale from this generator legally binding?

A bill of sale signed by both parties is generally a valid record of a private sale, and this template includes the elements courts and DMVs look for: the parties, the property with identifying numbers, the price in words and figures, condition and lien certifications, an odometer disclosure for vehicles, and signature, witness, and notary blocks. Requirements vary by state, and some transfers, like titled vehicles or firearms, have extra legal steps, so check your state's rules. This tool provides a template, not legal advice.

How do I sign the bill of sale online?

Right on the page: draw your signature with a mouse or finger, or type your name and it renders in a signature script. The signature is embedded into the PDF. Everything happens in your browser, so your signature never touches a server.

How does the buyer sign their half?

Two ways. If you are together, the buyer can sign in the second signature pad before you download. If not, send the PDF from the share button: the message includes step-by-step instructions for the buyer to open our free PDF Signature tool on their phone or computer, place their signature on the buyer line, and send the signed copy back. Their document never leaves their device either.

What can I write a bill of sale for?

Cars and trucks (with federal odometer disclosure), boats and vessels, motorcycles, trailers and RVs, firearms (with a compliance warning to check state law), horses and other animals, electronics, and a general template for anything else, from furniture to farm equipment.

Do I need a notary or witnesses for a bill of sale?

Most states do not require either, but a few require notarization for vehicle bills of sale, and both make the document stronger evidence. The generator has one-click toggles that add two witness signature lines and a standard notary acknowledgment block to the PDF.
